According to therapist Pat Thomas, the comforting smells help pregnant women in their labour. The scent eases worry and despair, refreshes declining spirits, and improves well-being.
These things are mostly important in labour. The more nervous and awful a woman is, the more difficult it is to handle her labour. There are several studies shown that women react correctly to the consumption of crucial oils during labour. Its benefits are fewer worries, pain, shorter labours, less post-natal depression, and shorter period in staying at the hospital.
The biggest study in using aromatherapy in labour included 8,000 women in Oxford for over eight years. It reported that women doing this had fewer productions, fewer caesareans, and lesser use of pain relieving drugs.
Aromatherapy is cheap, easy to dispense and has no recognised unpleasant effect in labour. It is a very simple method for a woman to rule her environment, and retain her self-confidence.
When a woman is in labour, there are several ways to use necessary oils. It can be used for inhalation, a compress, a refreshing spray, room scent, and a massage. It can also be used in a bath.
In inhalation, one can put a few drops of oil on a handkerchief wrapped in a plastic bag. At home, steam inhalation is effective and easy, but not convenient in the hospital. Hand held inhalers can also be used, rather than special tops of coffee mugs. In the hospital, a container of hot water can be used for inhalation.
In compress, one can add between 8–10 drops of oil to a half of cup of water. A wash rag must be immersed in the mixture. This will be put on the woman’s forehead.
For a refreshing spray, one must combine 100 millilitres of water with 2–5 drops of oil. It can be sprayed directly on the woman’s face or body, or on a pillow or bean bag.
In the room scents, the smell of oil must be spread in the room by using the oil burner, or placing one or two drops at a cool light bulb when about to turn on the light.
In a massage, one must constantly use oils watered down in light carrier oil. As an alternative for sunflower oil, one can use sweet almond, apricot kernel, and grape seed oil. Pregnant women may discover in their labour that their sense of smell is very sensitive. Many women use this quantity and always feel the benefits.
In a bath, one can mix the oil in apricot kernel oil, or in water-dispersing oil that is available from health food shops and toiletry stores. It must be mixed in a small amount of whole milk. The mixture should be transferred into the bath, where a pregnant woman can relax for about 15 minutes.
There are various essential oils that can be used, such as Lavender, Clary Sage, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Camomile, Frankincense, Jasmine, Rose, and Lemon. In a simple way, one should not mix more than five oils in a single mixture. Important baby information can be safely stored on an ssd drive, click here to find out more.
